If your firewall is a compliance control that auditors or cyber insurers scrutinize, Fortinet's security depth and Gartner recognition, according to Fortinet, are hard to beat, as long as you budget for FortiGuard renewals. For most small and mid-size sites, a UniFi Cloud Gateway with built-in IDS/IPS and segmentation is enough firewall, and its base firewall, IDS/IPS and VPN keep working with no subscription. Many businesses land in between: FortiGate at the edge, UniFi for switching and WiFi.

What happens when FortiGuard subscriptions expire?
Fortinet's administration guide says the FortiGate still functions as a firewall when any or all FortiGuard licenses expire. IPS and antivirus keep scanning with the last signatures they received, but category-based web and DNS filtering stops working, and by default that web and DNS traffic is dropped.
Fortinet also states that FortiGuard services are designed to be continuous, and that any lapse requires coverage back to the contract expiration date. In practice, letting a renewal slide for a few months does not save money.
UniFi Cloud Gateways include IDS/IPS without a subscription; Ubiquiti's optional CyberSecure add-on expands the signature set and content filtering for an annual fee.

Is a UniFi gateway as secure as a FortiGate?
Not in depth: FortiGuard's UTP and Enterprise bundles add URL and DNS filtering, sandboxing, DLP and attack surface monitoring that UniFi does not match. UniFi gateways do include IDS/IPS, rated up to 3.5 Gbps on the Dream Machine Pro and up to 12.5 Gbps on the Enterprise Firewall (EFG), which covers many small and mid-size sites.
The better question is what your risk and compliance obligations require. A Winston-Salem professional services firm with cloud apps may be well served by UniFi plus good endpoint security. Can you run a FortiGate with UniFi switches and WiFi?
Yes, and it is a common, legitimate design. The FortiGate handles the Internet edge, VPN and threat inspection, while UniFi switches and access points handle the LAN and WiFi, managed from a UniFi console such as a CloudKey or self-hosted UniFi OS Server.
- You keep FortiGuard protection where it matters most, at the edge.
- You avoid buying FortiSwitch and FortiAP hardware for every closet and ceiling.
- Trade-off: two consoles instead of one, and VLANs must be kept consistent between them.
- Trade-off: you lose FortiLink single-pane management of switches and access points.

How do five-year costs compare?
Fortinet's five-year cost includes the FortiGate plus FortiGuard bundle renewals for the full term, and FortiSwitch and FortiAP hardware if you standardize on Fortinet. UniFi's five-year cost is mostly hardware and support, since IDS/IPS carries no required subscription; add Ubiquiti's optional CyberSecure subscription if you want its expanded signatures and content filtering.
